Guest Speaker is Brian Kinchen
Brian Kinchen will be the guest speaker at WCA's annuaightof the Champions scheduled in the Crusader gym on Saturday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m. Kinchen played 13 seasons in the NFL as a tight end and deep snapper for the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Carolina Panthers before retiring to a life as a junior high Bible teacher at Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge. Nearly three full years into retirement, Kinchen received a phone call from an old friend, Scott Pioli, the general manager of the New England Patriots, near the end of the 2003 football season. Pioli wanted Kinchen to try out for a deep snapper position that had become available due to a late season injury to the Patriot's deep snapper. Kinchen accepted the invitation. What followed was a tale ending in a Super Bowl Championship for the Patriots and the penultimate play executed by Kinchen.
Kinchen's story was told in a best selling book, The Long Snapper, written by Jeffery Marx. Currently the Head Football Coach at Ascension Christian in Gonzales, Kinchen played at University High School and then later starred as a tight end for LSU. His wife, Lori, is a Lafayette native and Teurlings graduate. They have four boys. Kinchen has a strong Christian testimony, filled with great examples of underlying insecurities despite a strong, outward appearance. His father Gus was a member of the famed "Chinese Bandits" from LSU's 1958 National Championship team. Gus currently serves as the Baton Rouge Area Director for the FCA in Louisiana. Kinchen's brother, Todd, also started at LSU and played in the NFL for seven seasons. His son Austin is currently a deep snapper at LSU. Learn more about Brian Kinchen at thelongsnapper.com.
